With the countries in Asia, we are so pampered. Pump attendants are always on hand to greet you, fill up the tank and give your windscreen a good wipe. I believe Japanese design their fuel tank on the opposite side of the driver because of this culture. We park the fuel tank side next to the pump so that the attendant has easy access to it. Been driving for 15 years or so, I could only remember probably once or twice that I had to fill it up myself. And its because the attendants were too busy with other customers. It was kind of embarrassing not knowing how to operate the pump.
have heard that (apart from cost of an extra person's wages) attendents stopped in UK because of exposure to VOCs. OK if you're only filling up a single car but if you are doing it all day you breath in a lot of VOCs
