The Kei's are turbo'd because you wouldn't get enough horses from a 0.7 NA to be near practical. Unless you wanted a 20 seconds 0-60 car. You'd be having breakneck races with 2CVs!
Not all of them are turbo, just the modern ones, the beat is non turbo and plenty of the older keis are non turbo
wow they still matched the power NA, whats the turbo doing then! lol I wiki the Beat and it says max power was at some high revs. So I guess they got the power upto max Kei regs but buy running high revs so will lack low/mid end torque and grunt. So the turbo would give it low and mid want an NA doesn't have?
No smoke at all even under boost no, there is a film of oil around the BOV area though... Car drives fine however. I don't know how much is in the intercooler but there's always a film of wet oil near the top intercooler hose! Do you think the turbo might be on its way out then? I've got plenty of time to take the front apart and check it out, can leave it disassembled in our garage for a few days if needs be. 67hp from a naturally aspirated 660cc would be easy, see the Honda Beat for example. Think I would prefer that easy revving nature than a strangled turbo.. but then again I am not a massive turbo supporter, much prefer revving the nads off screaming NA's The japs are the world masters at small NA engines with loads of power, the B16 in the EK9 Civic type R is something like 180hp from a 1.6. My 2 litre EP3 Civic type R is positively understressed in comparison with its 200hp.
Yeah I referred to that after spats message earlier. I've never had a turbo car or driven on so not familiar with their characteristics. I have had two high revving Jap cars though.
Apologies I think the replies were written as I was writing my previous post so I didn't see them. Turbos have their place but I really dislike lag (however small it might be) to me it feels like theres a restriction thats suddenly removed, almost as if the car is running bad then its not. They make some cool noises though. I love Honda's vtec, I suppose thats similar in a way to a turbo except they pull good from low down then theres a manic extra push at the top end. Superchargers are more my cup of tea, zero lag and a lovely whine noise.
lag is fun, give others a chance before you come on boost, vtec is all the lag then no boost, dont get me wrong loved both my integra type rs but they massively missing torque and inless your in the correct gear its all over. superchargres are nice, had a tuned one in a merc c180 but didnt have the fun factor of a nice laggy turbo and arnt as easy or cheap to squeeze a few more ponies off compared to turbos i personal like the lag of a bigger upgraded turbo, always puts a massive smile on my face and the look of fear in unsuspecting passengers in my car some of the early kei's were also fitted with superchargers
Well chaps just as an update, (hope superspat doesn't mind me hijacking his thread for a bit) while my OH is on holiday I took her intercooler apart and removed the standard air intake.. Its plainly obvious when you take it out how restrictive it is! The intercooler despite looking on the outside like its come from a tar pit only had a small amount of oil inside, maybe a thimble full or two, which from research looks like thats normal. Definitely no oily 'wetness' on the inside of the pipes as I was expecting. I'm presuming that the crud on the outside of the IC was from 60k of road milage or a previous blown turbo in the past. I have pictures if anyone would like to see them let me know. Even so, I throughly cleaned out the intercooler with Gunk and water, giving it a shake to get as much residue out of it as possible. I then waited for it to dry completely before putting it back onto the car. I'm waiting on a 90 degree bend intake hose to arrive tomorrow and the OH will have herself a homebrew induction kit when she next gets to drive it. Wondering if I will notice a difference in power and throttle response with it on?
Seany yes lets see some photos...............oh and some of the car might be good also but start your own post if you do to leave this for spatty.
so ove rthe past 2 weeks cr turbos have had my spare turbo, they have been trying to build me a hybrid to my my specs, after lots fo tril and error they have created me a monster hybrid turbo, the onyl parts that are nearly standard are the inlet and exhaust housing, but they have both been machined a fair amount and larger wastgate hole and waste gate flap, the CHAR is of a much larger ihi turbo ( its top secret to me) and larger shaft with exhaust wheel and a even larger inlet compressor fitted, from the out side it still looks like a stadnard turbo but is actually 3 diffetn turbos machined to fit. Vince at cr turbos the bloke who has been building it was unsure on what power it will kick out as hes never build such a hybrid on such a small turbo, but he thinks it wil easily double the power depenign on the boost, but im hoping for between 100 and 120bhp at 1bar will update with pictures as will be going on the car over the next week if i get time
This looks awesome! where can i find that body kit? or something similar if you want to keep yours unique (id understand if you do). i would quite like to personalize my exterior, what sort of money have you spent on body parts? iv only bought mine 2 weeks ago so im ill informed when it comes to these kinds of costs! thanks, Josh
The front,Rear and skirt bumper lip kit is a original daihatsu optional extra, I paid aroubd 130 for all of it, fitted and painted it my self, The spoiler is from Japan but I have no idea what make it is as brought it second hand of eBay. There are a few companies in jspan that make body kits for copen and some the later models can with a smaller spoiler. Wheels I got for 30 and get them powder coated and needed stretches tires as they are much mixer than standard and also needed spacers between the wheels and hubs on the rear to clear the rear arm. Best thing u can do is ebay or sone 1 breaking a copen for body parts as shipping, and import costs push the prices up big time when buying from jspan
im still waiting for my hybrid hmy: , they are having a night mare trying to build it and its now consisting of 4 different ihi turbo parts, hopefully collecting it mid week as long they dont run in to any more problems in the mean time my sub arrived, didnt quite realize how small it actually it was, but it fits perfectly behind the passanger seat and adds a nice bit of bass, heres a pic to show just how small it is also brought adam K dsport engine cover to add some bling and hide the injectors a bit will also be making some new intercooler pipe work, mainly to make it bigger to carry more boost quicker and cause the plastic pipe work is nasty and thin, gonna end up looking something like this, just ghetto home build on a budget like everything else got board tonight and getting impatient waiting for the hybrid to be finished i decided to strip the turbo off, this was a rite fiddly job and needed some quick thinking, its not a easy diy job but had it all of with ni a hour it seams that the turob on the car is nearly brand new, it has deff been replaced and cant of done any more than 1k as its still shiny, this mite be up for sale also pulled out the ac pump, brackets and other bits of junk thats just adding weight and taking up space and chopped out more of the nasty plastic front panel so ive got more options for the air filter and new intercooler pipe work
You arn't really going to bolt on your nice new turbo onto that nasty cast downpipe are you? :-(-(-(-(-((
