Sorted! Yep, it was the ABS pump. These should pump up pressure when starting and when topping up due to abs releasing pressure. New (second hand) pump got rid of the noise. @Rex, check in your case as the pump could be on its way...
Thanks all for your insights and help.

I''ve just bought a 2007 copen and it does the same! he previous owner said it had done it for 4 years!

Your post is perfect for me and thanks for posting.

COuld you tell me the part number for the ABS pump or are all Copen ABS pumps the same regardless of year?

    Thanks a lot

I had my ABS pump replaced but it STILL makes the noise! The local garage doesn't have the equipment to programme the EMU or ecu or something so they used the old one. Did you reprogramme the EMU for the ABS too? The pump works but the sound is still there. Can you help please?
    THanks - Kevin

Hi Kevin, We did replace the pump and I don't remember reprogramming anything at all. With these pumps, there's always a noise, quite often you don't hear it. Mine though was quite loud as you can hear in the videos. This got reduced with the new pump, but I could still hear it (now that I know it's there) over the engine sound. the replacement got louder over time after it got installed. I guess it is "normal" for this to happen. Mind you, the replacement was second hand so that would explain it. Silly me, I didn't keep the old one to see whether it was serviceable or not.
In my case I won't bother replacing it unless it gets as loud as it was before (quite so) hopefully at least in a couple of years or so.
I hope this helps. Keep me posted with progress, please.
    Cheers.

That is a brilliant response - thank you so much. My old pump was about the same volume as yours. My new pump makes the noise but it is a lot quieter than the old one - probably about 20% of the old volume!.
I have had 3 Copens before this one and never heard the noise before.
Anyway, I am consoled by your response - I'll just treat it as an idiosyncrasy!
    Cheers

    Kevin

Ours has always had this noise, this is our second one I think our first one did it too!!!
So long as the ABS system works why would you change it???

I am amazed that you had the noise on 2 Copens.... It's my first experience out of 4 Copens. Oh well.... It's something I accept now and will live with and smile each and every time I start the engine and move off! hahahahhaha
