The question is: Can you flash the original ECU? Maybe its a read-only, so you would have to use a piggyback ECU like Haltech or the DSport ECU marnob: Nah, I would not drive that far, but you could call them and ask
Fair enough. Yes you can. You can send your ECU to Japan for a remap or you can just get one sent already remapped for extra cost. I have thought about doing that instead of buying a D-Sport ECU. A lot cheaper.
Galletto 1260: Other Diagnostic Service Tools | eBay seems a popular DIY one, it's basically a set of cables and a cd to connect your ECU to a PC or laptop, the problem is it doesn't list Daihatsu as compatible. I'm looking around, there are quite a few different ones, from PC based kits to much more expensive stand-alone versions like the Bluefin, which 'locks' to one car, but I can't find any with Daihatsu listed so far. ODB2 ECU remapping supposedly works on most cars built since 2001, but some are 'tune protected' to prevent it and need the chip removing, hopefully the Copen isn't...
Found a better explanation of ECU types Advanced Tuning: What ECU do I have ? and it looks like we're probably all out of luck for DIY or flash tuning. Japanese Denso ECU’s Generally fitted to Japanese vehicles these are technically OBD programmable, however generally by the main dealer for bug fixes and updates. However over recent months some of these Denso’s can be remapped over the OBD port, yet still In the majority of cases it involves the ECU removed and bench flashed using Specialist J-Tag equipment mainly because these ECU’s hold the map data in the core of the Renesas Micro Processor. So on the bright side, I have a better idea what I'm looking for. If what we need is a tuner with specialist equipment for Japanese cars, in theory any that tune more common Jap imports should have the equipment, if not the software, to deal with ours.
Wow, well spotted. Hmmm it does seem like a problem here. The guy who does it in Japan must have the right equipment to do just that. He has a list of what is remapped and its pretty much the same as a D-Sport ECU without the huge cost. His ad on the Auction sites has been there for years. It always ends with someone bidding. Its also interesting to note the D-Sport ECU doesn't go with the UK Copens? They are OBDII so much easier.
