Don’t want to be dumb (I haven’t worked on an engine since distributors and HT leads) but there are 2 bolts per could and I remove the electrical connector first and the pull the coil pack of the plug just as I would with an old HT LEAD.
Well, I had all good intentions but the plugs are virtually impossible to get at with my hands. I hadn’t realised they were at the back of the engine and it’s so tight to get to them I gave up. How much of the engine do you have to remove to be able to get to them ? I guess removing the cover is the first thing but what’s the rail that sits above them ?
You just tried to unplug the fuel rail The spark plugs are underneath the black engine cover thats bolted on with 4 screws Sorry if I mislead you, I thought this was common knowledge
Lol, I resisted the urge to remove anything as it was cold and I just wanted a look. I’ll file it under “jobs for a warm day”. The good new is that it passed the annual MOT inspection with just 1 advisory about a dodgy tyre valve.
I fully agree - I have another car VW CC and just bought a parking sensor from Europarts.com for a portion of the price that one of our high profile dealers (Australia) was going to charge.
Inner diameter: 12.3mm Outer diameter: 21mm Thickness: 1.6mm Look for Febi Bilstein 30263 At least thats correct for the 1.3 engine
@Salieri I just hit 56k miles so even if I have Iridium plugs, they’re due a change. Thanks for the previous pic as it’s much clearer now but given that the plugs may have been in for 9 years, would you change them with the engine warm or cold ?
I'd screw them out when the engine has warmed up a little and screw the new ones in when the engine is cold
Having waited a bit, I can’t get 4 NGKs at a price I’m prepared to pay. Anyone got the Denso equivalent number available please. I understand that Bosch and other manufacturers cause problems but at 70+ mph (no faster officer), it was pulling like a train with the roof down.
Regular plugs K20R-U11: DENSO Nickel, Spark Plug K20R-U11 - Spark Plug - Car parts at 123spareparts.co.uk Iridium IK20 Twin Tip (TT): DENSO Iridium TT, Spark Plug IK20TT - Spark Plug - Car parts at 123spareparts.co.uk Also lookie here: DENSO SPARK PLUGS
@Salieri Thanks again. I got the Denso K20R-U11 off Amazon at just under £15 for 4. I only do 4K miles a year so they should be fine. I should add that I finally read the manual to find the spec !
I might be over thinking this, but the plugs arrived today so it’s my job for this weekend to change them. I only have a basic socket set that I’ve owned since 1978 ! It’s got a plug socket but my next daft questions are : How tight do I do the new plugs up ? Do I need a torque wrench ? Do I need an anti seize agent as some Youtubers suggest ? If so what is it ? Can I assume that the plug gaps are factory set ? They have a protective cover over the business end. Cheers.
Screw them in until they sit flush, then do another quarter turn to tighten (do not use excessive force) No anti-seize needed, spark plugs are coated from the factory. Denso and NGK plugs are factory-gapped and need no adjustment You need a 16mm spark plug socket, I hope you have one. Check on the new plugs if the socket fits
They built them to last in those days. FYI my feeler gauges are in 1/1000ths of an inch so I had to use google to figure out the metric equivalent and then use Brasso on the blades to bring them back to life so the rust didn’t impinge on the measurements.
Anyway @Vin Petrol you never replied to my message last year about a run out to the Strines. It’s probably about halfway from Barnsley and Stockport.
