We'll the mrs dropped the Copen in at our regular garage for a service this morning. She got a phone call late afternoon to say it won't be ready till tomorrow as they've not been able to get at the oil filter & they'll have to take off the engine mounts to get at it? I can see from the instructions above make no mention of having to remove the engine mounts & nor does the chap I watched changing his oil filter on YouTube remove them. Now me & the Mrs have used this garage for the 6 years since we've lived in the area & they have always given us great service at a reasonable price. But I'm a bit concerned about paying for additional hourly labour due to their inexperience in dealing with this car. Looking at the paperwork that came with the car there's an invoice for the last oil filter change for £64. Granted that wasn't for a full service but I'm concerned my garage has done a whole load of unnecessary work & will be giving us a hefty bill.
I've never heard of anyone taking the engine mount off to change the oil filter. Have you spoken to them about it? Have you described to them the correct method of removing the oil filter as described in the service manual? If a none genuine oil filter was fitted before, it will be a pain to remove, as some filters are too tall & cannot fit through the gap in the engine mount. I would suggest to them to remove the bumper partially. This then let's you remove the air filter & the intercooler pipe giving enough access to get out the old oil filter. If you don't want to go through this again, stress to them that you want a genuine Daihatsu oil filter to be used (or a least one that is 50mm high).
No not spoken to the garage as they only phoned as they were about to close & spoke to my mrs as I was at work. I've printed off the above instructions and take it down to them tomorrow at 8 when they open. Most of the old invoices with the car are from Daihatsu garages and the last owner did most of the maintenance himself in his farther in laws garage (as in a mechanics garage not a home garage) Wished I'd just bought all the bits myself now along with the Daihatsu oil filter tool and took them to them along with the instructions. Do you think they're struggling to get it off due to not having the correct oil filter tool?
When I was getting mine serviced, I gave them the two tools - one for the Daihatsu filter and the other for the Mahle... They didn't need either, just a tap with a screwdriver and she popped out. FYI - most motorcycle shops should have the filter removal tool.
I think the last time the filter was changed, they used an aftermarket brand that is taller than 50mm. Which means it won't fit through the gap in the engine mount. They're thinking the easyiest way to access the filter is to remove the engine mount. Could be quicker than the bumper, air filter, intercooler pipe method. It's just a more radical option. I would've thought they would have a range of filter removal tools to handle different brands.
Turned out their supplier sent them the wrong oil filter which they found out after watching youtube last night. All sorted now with just an hours labour so happy enough.
Klausanta, Looking at the pics of the sump plugs the 'blue' one seems to be smaller than the genuine Diahatsu part or do I need to go to Specsavers ?
Klausanta, Just noticed on the first picture there was a filter removal tool alongside the filter. Is this supplied with the filter ? Ned
Hi Ned Specsavers I think. They are both: Dimensions: M12 x 1.25 (size x thread pitch). I think that this size is colour coded on the magnetic version in blue. The sump washer supplied with the magnetic version was fine. I fitted an original Daihatsu oil filter which requires: Dimensions: 68mm x 14 flute removal tool but as OEM filters may vary slightly, I purchased a set of these from eBay. It is not supplied with the filter. All parts for the 0.7 turbo are completely different to the 1.3 non turbo. Hope this all helps Best regards KS
KS, Thanks. I've just ordered a 65mm removal tool based on info on another thread. It would seem the filters vary in size depending upon whether the filter is OEM or not. It's definately worth doing it yoursel. Halfords charged me £49 for an oil change only and a local garage £80+ for oil and filter change. Ned
Hi, I had an issue with my ECU and a misfire, I initially thought it was an ignition coil problem and set about hunting down a replacement - not an easy task! When I eventually got a socket set out and started to have a look, it turned out to be a broken (in 2 pieces) spark plug. It was a Sunday and Halfords claimed to have a compatible plug,I popped along to the store to find they didn't stock the one quoted online but the guy there offered another one Champion. Not iridium, but thought worth a try! Replaced all 4 while I was at it and the car runs fine, not the hideously expensive coil pack Anyone know if there might be a long term issue in not using the iridium, these are good for 36k according to the packaging
Just ordered Mahle OC478 using link above only to receive a different model! The seller informed me that Mahle said it wasa direct replacement, it is however much taller and 65mm wide, rendering the 68mm wrench I also bought, useless- unless the filter on my car is actually 68mm and many suggest it should be! Anyone bought oil filter and wrench recently so I can buy the right parts??
I had a look on eBay and many suppliers are now listing Mahle OC487 as obsolete and the direct replacement as OC215. As far as I was aware the OC215 version is for the 1300cc engine (D)65.5 x (H)65 (3/4"-16UNF-2Bmm) (K3-VE engine). However, both these filters have a quoted diameter of 65.5mm (the main difference is the height) so I am not really sure what they have sent you? Also found a much cheaper option for sump washers (pack of 10 M12 x 18 x 1.5mm @ £4.99 delivered): http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/280783012...49&var=580059216866&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT And a magnetic sump plug and washer (M12 x 1.25mm @ £3.99 delivered): http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/141167169772?_trksid=p2060778.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT Probably the best option now is to try and source a genuine Daihatsu oil filter - I think there was a supplier listed somewhere in this thread? All the best KS
