Arrr, forgot to look at his profile..of course I see it now..drrrrr..
I did wonder that. Mine is a 2004 model. I don't have any faults or at least any problems with the car.
There is an exchange on Yahoo auctions in Japan. 35,000Yen less 10,000 if you swap your ECU?
Seems they will do the same as the D-Sport with the limiters etc for a fraction of the price.

I started a new discussion about the speedo calibration because I noticed its very different from Japanese ones.
They max at 140km & ours are 240km.
That made me think there isn't a speed limiter for the ones here in Aust or perhaps elsewhere?
I haven't tested how fast my Copen will go though?
Did you notice much difference when you put the D-Sport one in?
If my theory is right then it would have been some boost & the rev limit, so perhaps only a couple of things?
Changing some boost it not hard & the rev limit was only 500 off memory, so not sure if there is such a big
    advantage for price?

I haven't got a Dsport ECU, I had a Unichip fitted to the original ECU.
If you do a search I posted the results on this forum, I'm very happy with the results especially drivability.

You are right, its the L881 left hand drive model.
Shouldn't all cars from 1996 and up have an OBDII port?

Yes, in the US. The EU was around the same time as well... The Copen, EU spec, is OBD-II compliant. The Jap models are also OBD-II spec... I'd highly doubt the Aussie spec is different, with the exception of the seatbelt warning light IIRC

Aussie cars didn't have to be OBD2 until 2006.
It's possible the Copen is but not on any of the compatibility lists.
Mind you if the manufactures could save a few dollars for each car they sent over here by not making them OBD2 and not putting in the seatbelt light they would.

I have several cheap ELM327's from Ebay, a PLX kiwi 3 and a Autophix that I bought for the Audi I used to have because it is meant to support nearly every protocol there is.

None of them will read from my Dsport ECU equipped L880. From memory the standard ECU uses KWP Slow - not sure what the Dsport uses. So far have had no CEL's - but would like to find one that works with the Dsport.

I do remember seeing a Youtube clip in Japanese where the guy appeared to doing a mod regarding a pin swap - to get it all working. I cant translate audio - nor can I find the clip again :)

The EU Copen, at least, is ISO / KWP2000 (ATSP5).

I remember something along the lines of "The D-Sports ECU doesn't do OBD-II"...

I also doubt that the Aussie Copen's don't have ODB-II - think about it, you might be saving a few dollars per unit, but is that saving worth having a non-homogenous production line? I am, of course, open to correction.

We are such a small market here is OZ you wouldn't think it's worth there while changing anything but the do.
I've got a 2000 RAV4 that isn't OBD2 but it is in just about every other market. Completely different wiring harness as well.
Some Nissan patrols over here have the drivers tail light replaced with a fake because it's not needed here. Wouldn't think it was worth it either.

I contacted "Fuel Economy Solutions" a while ago regarding "Foxwell" and they had this to say:
Will the Foxwell allow you to download/upload a copy of the ECU file like the MPPS will?
Secondly, will it work with Japanese cars like the Daihatsu Copen 2004 model.

Yes you will be able to save and print data.
The NT510 is single car scanner. There is no software to cover Daihatsu. However, to cover all cars you can check the NT644 which is an all system diagnostics and reset scan tool. The difference is it does not have bidirectional feature to allow actuation, adaptation and coding!

The NT644 is an expensive little bugger, around $700AU depending where you look?
A bit much I thought for something you can only diagnose with but still.
Not sure how that would go with the D-Sport though?

I did not think something like this exists; I thought everybody would get the same car more or less. Proper stupid! :D

I know it's a bit late, but the Copens in Australia will not be readable by any scanner that doesn't support JOBD. I know, because I tried endless Chinese readers and none of them would communicate with the car. The JOBD one does, but in a limited way. It seems that only emission-related things are supported. Better than nothing.
