Roof - works, but only after I've opened/closed the boot

I've read all the roof threads but can't find this problem

I've checked the handbrake sensors etc, hinges and sliders are all clean and lubricated, blue hooks in place etc. On starting the car, the roof won't retract or close, open the boot and close it (no other changes), roof works perfectly. Go for a drive, boot must be opened and closed for the roof to work (either way)

Very frustrating as other than that it all seems fine - any ideas please?
    thanks
    Andy

Does the red light stay on before you open and close the boot?

I know you said you checked them but, this happened to me for a while after a roof mishap and I found that opening the boot and turning the blue bits of plastic until they popped into place fixed the issue.

Hi dsb, yes, I noticed the boot wasn't closing at the roof end; popping these back in place solved that particular problem, it now closes snugly with and even panel gap.
    Thanks

    Thanks, threepot,

    Here's the sequence:

(Roof closed, windows up, doors closed)
Ignition on, roof light on momentarily (along with dash lights - assume this is initial check)
    - Roof light goes out
Engine on, handbrake on (its dash light on), windows up, in Park, doors closed
    Undo clamps,
    - Roof light comes on stays on (solid) - pull roof switch, roof light flashes, nothing happens

Close clamps, Switch off ignition (roof still closed, windows up).

Open/Close boot (using key fob, all fine)
(sensor lever and micro switch inside boot lid seem ok)

Ignition on, roof light on momentarily, roof light goes out, engine on, handbrake on (its dash light is on)
    Undo clamps
    - Roof light comes on - pull roof switch, windows down automatically, roof opens fine, roof light remains solid until beep sound then goes off

Switch off ignition (roof open, windows down).

Ignition on, roof light on momentarily - roof light goes out, engine on, handbrake on all as above - try roof, roof light flashes, nothing happens

Open/Close boot with key fob (roof still open, windows down)

Ignition on, roof light on momentarily - roof light goes out, engine on, handbrake on all as above - try roof, works fine,
    - Roof light solid until beep, close roof clamps, roof light off, windows up manually

So it seems there is something in the boot which is intermittent - doesn't seem like a physical thing since the car is completely stationary through this process

    regards
    Andy

    Hi

    Two things I would check/do.

    1. Lubricate boot lock mechanism and check wires/connector going to this mechanism as some do run along the bottom of the boot which is prone to leaks/damp/rust. I had a lot of oxidisation on the connector on mine.

    2. Check that the wire on the manual boot release lever (inside middle glove box under a small plastic flap) is pushed/fed fully back towards the rear of the car. Try moving this when the roof does not open.

Worth a go as easy to check?

Thanks KS - I'll give both tips a try in the morning

A flashing light means the roof conditions are not met.

I would test the circuit for the parcel shelf switch and the luggage retainer micro switch.

And also the hand brake switch.

Also you should bridge the diagnostic connector and retrieve any error codes that its giving.

First look under the dashboard above the clutch pedal,

    Find the Diagnostics port.

    Bend a paperclip into a U shape.

Push it into the diagnostic port connecter as shown below:-

Turn the key on, watch the red roof light, count the flashes.

    Check them against this list:-

Thanks threepot - very comprehensive! I can zoom on the picture enough but not the fault code page, is it in the manual or can you post a higher res one please?

codes are in the workshop manual L5 on page 17

The image above is plenty good enough to read so I suggest its something to do with your computer :)

    Hi,

Just a quick thanks for your help - the dealer I bought it from seems to have fixed the roof problem, works a treat now

    Loose wire..

I just fixed my roof problem. Apparently the auto electricians spent ages on it before I bought it. After about an hour is was sorted.
I actually had two fault codes. One was the ECU for windows & the other was the roof ECU.
51 & 81. I reset both ECU's and ended up with only one fault code.
The roof ECU. Unfortunately for the previous owner but good for me they had replaced the ECU so I figured it wasn't that.
So I went to the boot where it is and had a look to see if all the wiring looked ok but when I was checking I found a loose wire that came right out of the plug.
When I fixed that I went back and reset the ECU again and then tried the roof and all was good.
So check all your wiring carefully just in case there is a loose connection. Its so simple that most just look for the expensive and complicated options!

Yep, Devil is in the detail!

Most of the stuff I fix at work, I fix with little or no parts. I do a lot of soldering things back together on a daily basis though.

Often I patch up ECU's themselves where they have gotten water damaged and rotted the tracks of the board. So I solder in link wires and replace components and they spring back into life. Its always worth a shot.

    roof problems

Happy xmas to all My roof does work but not without manual persuasion. I am just a rtetired lady who loves my car but would love it better if I could get the roof working better. I suspect the problem is Hydrolic rather than electric and have found in the boot a horizontal plastic cylinder that appears to be part of the pump. The cylinder is less than 1/2 full of what appears to be oil and becomes totally empty while I am working the roof and I have some oil around it . Should the cylinder be full and with what and how can I fill it? I would appreciate your help. I do not have a owners manual and downloaded a workshop manual from the internet but cant find much about the pump

As much as I would love to help, I have never had to top up the hydraulic fluid on the roof system, so I have no idea really.

But I would suspect if you need to replace fluid, then you are losing it somewhere, and that must be resolved.

I agree also. Sounds like a hydraulic leak. It may not need to be completely full (think of your reservoir for your brakes - only filled to the level line) but any hydraulic system needs to be leak free to function properly. Hopefully just a new copper washer needed on the banjo bolt?
