Roof - works, but only after I've opened/closed the boot

Does the red light stay on before you open and close the boot?

 

I know you said you checked them but, this happened to me for a while after a roof mishap and I found that opening the boot and turning the blue bits of plastic until they popped into place fixed the issue.

Two things I would check/do.

1. Lubricate boot lock mechanism and check wires/connector going to this mechanism as some do run along the bottom of the boot which is prone to leaks/damp/rust. I had a lot of oxidisation on the connector on mine.

2. Check that the wire on the manual boot release lever (inside middle glove box under a small plastic flap) is pushed/fed fully back towards the rear of the car. Try moving this when the roof does not open.

Worth a go as easy to check?

A flashing light means the roof conditions are not met.

I would test the circuit for the parcel shelf switch and the luggage retainer micro switch.

And also the hand brake switch.

Also you should bridge the diagnostic connector and retrieve any error codes that its giving.

 

First look under the dashboard above the clutch pedal,

Find the Diagnostics port.

Bend a paperclip into a U shape.

Push it into the diagnostic port connecter as shown below:-



Turn the key on, watch the red roof light, count the flashes.

Check them against this list:-

 

codes are in the workshop manual L5 on page 17

The image above is plenty good enough to read so I suggest its something to do with your computer

 

Loose wire..

I just fixed my roof problem. Apparently the auto electricians spent ages on it before I bought it. After about an hour is was sorted.
I actually had two fault codes. One was the ECU for windows & the other was the roof ECU.
51 & 81. I reset both ECU's and ended up with only one fault code.
The roof ECU. Unfortunately for the previous owner but good for me they had replaced the ECU so I figured it wasn't that.
So I went to the boot where it is and had a look to see if all the wiring looked ok but when I was checking I found a loose wire that came right out of the plug.
When I fixed that I went back and reset the ECU again and then tried the roof and all was good.
So check all your wiring carefully just in case there is a loose connection. Its so simple that most just look for the expensive and complicated options!

Most of the stuff I fix at work, I fix with little or no parts. I do a lot of soldering things back together on a daily basis though.

Often I patch up ECU's themselves where they have gotten water damaged and rotted the tracks of the board. So I solder in link wires and replace components and they spring back into life. Its always worth a shot.

 

roof problems

Happy xmas to all My roof does work but not without manual persuasion. I am just a rtetired lady who loves my car but would love it better if I could get the roof working better. I suspect the problem is Hydrolic rather than electric and have found in the boot a horizontal plastic cylinder that appears to be part of the pump. The cylinder is less than 1/2 full of what appears to be oil and becomes totally empty while I am working the roof and I have some oil around it . Should the cylinder be full and with what and how can I fill it? I would appreciate your help. I do not have a owners manual and downloaded a workshop manual from the internet but cant find much about the pump

 

As much as I would love to help, I have never had to top up the hydraulic fluid on the roof system, so I have no idea really.

But I would suspect if you need to replace fluid, then you are losing it somewhere, and that must be resolved.

 

I agree also. Sounds like a hydraulic leak. It may not need to be completely full (think of your reservoir for your brakes - only filled to the level line) but any hydraulic system needs to be leak free to function properly. Hopefully just a new copper washer needed on the banjo bolt?

Thanks I am wondering if that is the case so I will source an expert after xmas as I dont know enough about it Can anyone tell me how much fluid is in their cylinder so I can gage if mine has enough please
