It was a long process but I eventually got a Unichip working on the Copen. Apparently the Copen uses an unusual ignition trigger so Unichip had to rewrite the software mutable times to get it to work with it. The results have been good with gains in power an torque over the entire rev range. About 8.2 KW at the top end witch doesn't sound like much until you realise it's over 20% gain on an otherwise stock motor. The most noticeable gain on the road is the drivability, the tuners removed the dip in power at 2900 rpm and it's made it so much easier to drive in traffic. Haven't driven it hard yet (had the misses in the car) to see what gains there are on the open road, hopefully this weekend.
45kw at the wheels is something around 80 metric horsepower at the crank, which is nice Get rid of the soda can stock exhaust and it might go even faster
My total cost was about $2300 Aussie dollars but about $500 of that was testing and development. I'd say if someone was to take another copen into my tuner it would be around the $1800 mark. I know I could have got a Dsport ecu for around $1300 but as far as I can tell they aren't programable and from what I've read results are a bit hit and miss. Having the ECU custom tuned to my motor was worth the extra cost. Its nice to have the dyno results too so I don't need to rely on the seat of my pants.
Thanks, its a heap load of dollars but looks like they did a heap load of work and good results also. Bbet your pleased.
Great, thanks dude! I live in Brisbane, so that's definitely going to be convenient if I go that route. If there's other Copen owners in the Brissy area, we might be able to get a group buy happening, given that they'd essentially be cloning the same map.
They don't clone the map like powerchip or similar. It gets tuned on the dyno to suit your car and mods. No two motors are the same even from the factory, if you want it done right it's goto be on the dyno.
Fine tuning it yeah, but I'd imagine they can get it roughly there a lot faster by cloning the map, then adjusting it on the dyno? It would make sense and save time if they had a few of the same car coming in so might convince them to drop the price a bit.
The Unichip is a piggyback unit therefore most of the tuning map is done from factory. It's the fine tuning that's important. After doing mine they now know what works and how to wire them up so it will be cheaper than mine anyway. FYI Unichip themselves wrote 6 or 7 firmware updates just to get it working on the Copen due to the weird triggers it used.
There's a dealer locator on Unichips website, East coast custom in Brisbane did mine so they could provide your dealer with help.
