I recently acquired a 2004 Copen for my better half. She loves it apart from the noise the BOV valve makes. I was told it had been added by a previous owner to create the "rally car " effect. Im not very familiar with Copen mechanicals (spend most of my time with old Landrovers) but Ive downloaded a service manual today but as yet I'm not sure what has been altered from original on this car in relation to this BOV accessory. Are these things easy to remove and return to original ?
I clearly know little about BOVs, but Ive had a good look and the noise is coming from the end of this pipe (red circle) which comes from the ABV. What/where goes onto the end of the pipe? Also the pipe (green arrow) was disconnected from the pink plastic connector - I presume deliberately and in conjunction with the pipe mentioned above.
To conclude. Further investigation revealed that the pipe from air cleaner to turbo had been inserted the wrong way round. The dump valve/BOV/ABV pipe (red circle) could then not reach the air cleaner/turbo pipe and was left just hanging. The hole it connected with had been left open !!! so the air cleaner was being bypassed to an extent. Reversing the air cleaner/turbo pipe to the correct position allowed everything to connect up properly and the noise that irritated my beloved has gone. Just hope the turbo/engine has not been damaged by the reduced air filtration.
Thanks - Luckily I decided to have a look myself. The engine has done 57K miles and runs well. Next job is changing the oil and filter - the filter looks a pig of a job.
