Reading about the words of using E10 fuel in older cars, and musing on the possibility of buying one of those cars, I wondered whether there were additives that could be added to E10 fuel to condition it for older fuel systems. Looking on Amazon did indeed show a few fuel conditioners, but they seemed quite expensive (up to £10 for one fuel tank shot!). And then I stumbled on the new Redex fuel system conditioner, the classic red stuff, but it's now been reformulated for use with E10 fuel.

It wasn't exactly clear from their website whether it's use would allow older cars to safely use E10 so I wrote to them. I also couldn't see it being sold in the shops yet and I wasn't sure whether the old Redex of which I've got several bottles of (bought this summer, sods law) was also beneficial for E10 fuel.

So I emailed Holts and received a reply this morning which clarifies their position. They say "If you have a car that is not compatible with E10 fuel then our Petrol System Cleaner will make the petrol compatible by protecting against potential corrosion from the higher ethanol content". On the face of it this seems like good news. It remains to be seen whether the price will be as reasonable as before and most importantly, whether it will provide the protection it promises.

There is inconsistency in the marketing of the new stuff. It's not clear how widely available it is yet. Redex rather unhelpfully links to shops selling redex but nowhere on those Web pages does it say its an E10 conditioner. Except Amazon which again unhelpfully has a picture of the old bottle, even though they'd updated the rear bottle picture. It's only when I scrolled down the page I could see that this was actually the new stuff. The new Redex range uses a new bottle shape.

I hope this might be helpful for older Copen owners. My Copen is E10 compatible being made in 2009, but I'm toying with the idea of buying a YRV 1.3 Turbo which won't be E10 compatible.
