    Hi all,

I was wondering if anybody who owns, or has driven, a Daihatsu Copen with an automatic gearbox could enlighten me a bit.

I have recently purchased an automatic version of the 660cc Copen, which needs a bit of restoration work, but it currently starts, drives, stops etc.
However, I have no knowledge of the automatic gearbox.

When I start the car in 'Park' the green light on the dash steadily highlights the 'P' which is straightforward enough. It does this for 'N' and 'R'.
But when I put the shift into drive the 'D' flashes. Is this normal or should that also be a steady light?

I also believe it is a 4-speed automatic, but there is no indication on the dash which gear the car is in. Should there be? And if so, where is the indication displayed?

As mentioned, the car runs and drives, but it is not easy to tell when the gears change, or if all 4 gears can be selected. I believe there might be an issue during automatic gear changes and they don't occur in sequence. Furthermore, the manual select option doesn't appear to work because I can't select any higher or lower gears at all.

I was just wondering if anybody out there has any advice or insight into these cars or could provide any information that could help me diagnose any issues.

    Many thanks in advance

    Rich

I have an auto and the gear is displayed on the dash, the D symbol should not flash, it should remain lit when in drive. When in manual I think M is displayed. it is a 4 speed auto but there is also I think a lock up clutch across the torque converter that can make it feel like there is a 5th but there isn't, it's just the clutch pack bypassing the torque converter. Sadley the manual doesn't cover the auto so I don't know any more. But I feel sure an auto box specialist should be able to help you?
The gear is displayed by the milage display.

Used to have a White Copen, but I sold it in 2023
Is there enough fluid in the transmission? When has it last been changed? Usually a flashing D indicates some kind of fault

    Hi all.
Thanks for taking the time to reply.
I own a few Copens but I have never seen an automatic one before. Well. Not until I collected this one.

I havent had a chance to look at it properly yet. It's nowhere near roadworthy and has been sat for quite a while so not sure if that will have had an effect on the gearbox or not.
I just took it for a bit of a test drive yesterday and it starts up and drives. So that's something I suppose. And all the other bits seem to work. Just needs a bit of tidying up.

But when I engage 'drive' there is a hell of a clunk as it engages. Is that quite normal on these things?
Also the transition from 1st to second gear doesn't seem to work very well (if at all). It does change gear but I think it jumps from 1st to 3rd or 4th or something as there is a real lag between gear changes. And I have no indication what gear it is in at any point.

So the flashing is not normal then? Does anybody know if there is a way to read potential fault codes like there is with the roof system?

Is there an easy way to check the level of fluid on the transmission? Not sure if there is a dipstick for it as haven't looked yet.

Might try disconnecting and cleaning connectors and sensors and stuff first before enquiring with a gearbox specialist. Was just hoping somebody with experience with the automatic copens might give me a few pointers.

Thanks again all of you who have replied. I do appreciate it
