Hi, this is my first question, I intend to give my car a service and would like to know what the air filter is that is on the car, it is fitted at the front left side when looking at the car and does not appear to be standard, it is cone shaped paper type, red in colour and has a chrome back and points downwards.
Can anyone tell me what it is and where I could get one, also what plugs, oil filter and oil would you recommend?
The service history only goes up to 45000 miles june 07 is there a way of finding out if the timing belt has been changed? would it be safer to have it changed anyway and what kind of cost will it be?

    Any help is very welcome.

    Thanks

    Mags

Hi Mags, which engine type do you have?
Going by the air filter location I'd say it's the 659 turbo?
This model has a timing chain & doesn't need changing.

Can you post a photo of the air filter? It sounds like an induction filter has been fitted.
Depending on the type, there are different ways to clean them. Sounds like it could a K&N type filter.

Oil, I'd go with Magnetec 5w30.
Oil filter, I'd buy a genuine Daihatsu one.

Oil filters are a pig to fit (search the forum for oil filter). Without the proper tool it isn't easy.

Plenty of others on ebay. However there are different sizes. Some won't fit through the engine mount to fit them.

    Spark plugs :

    :)Thanks Adam,

It is the turbo model so good to know it has a timing chain, I will go with your recommendations re: plugs oil and filter, is it possible to buy the oil filter tool as the filter changes come round very quick.

Will take a photo of the air filter when I get a chance.(will this induction filter improve performance/economy etc.?)

The engine seems to run very sweetly and is very quiet with a nice rasp sound to the exhaust, my only concerns so far are that the windows get a lot of overnight condensation when parked (worried that there may be some kind of leak in the roof or boot as the underside of the boot lid was also wet with condensation) but it was minus 3c here last night.

When I fitted my induction kit. I noticed the car was more responsive. Quicker throttle response. Just more eager.
The standard air filter is quite restrictive.

The oil filter tool is available to buy from Daihatsu. You can buy similar tools from Amazon, I've found they don't quite fit the standard filter. They need a bit of tweaking.
The Daihatsu tool won't be cheap, but you'll get your money back on not paying a mechanic to do it. Plus when you decide to sell on the car. You can sell the tool on to another owner.

Daihatsu part number 09228-87201-000 - Wrench Oil Filter.

The chances are the middle brake light is leaking. Check under the jack in the boot for a puddle. The below threads are options on how to fix it.
